Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship between motor development and early literacy among elementary school students through a systematic literature review. Article retrieval was conducted using Publish or Perish through the Google Scholar database, yielding 520 articles published between 2020 and 2025. The selection process followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, resulting in 10 articles analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that fine motor skills significantly contribute to early writing ability, while visual–motor coordination plays an important role in early reading skills. Handwriting emerges as a foundational component of early literacy by integrating motor skills with language representation, supported by social context and instructional strategies. This review concludes that early literacy development cannot be separated from motor development. Future studies are recommended to employ longitudinal or experimental designs to examine causal relationships more rigorously.
